Buddha

The Manchester Shambhala Meditation Group will be hosting a 3-week class on the life of the Buddha, Tuesday evenings from 7-9pm on May 5th, 12th, and 19th. The class will be taught by Jason Newman and will be based on the book Buddha by Karen Armstrong.

Karen Armstrong (a Christian nun in remission) has written a biography of the Buddha for the Penguin short biography series. The book approaches the Buddha from an historic perspective. Ms. Armstrong (a popular author of comparative religion) seems to ask the question: what do we really know about who the Buddha was in the context of his historic time and what do his religious discoveries mean for us today?

This three week “book course” intends to explore what a Christian author has discovered about the historic Buddha and his times and what her discoveries might mean for individuals meditating in the Buddha’s tradition today. Jason suggests that this course could be mind stretching for the average Buddhist “believer” (forcing a re-thinking of commonplace understandings) and enlightening (in a non-religious sense) for the new student wondering what all the fuss about Buddhism could be about.

The book itself is not required for the course, though you may wish to read it for better understanding of Jason’s teachings. It can be ordered through the Northshire Bookstore.

Our center is supported through your generous donations! The suggested donation for this class is $5 per week or $15 for the course.
