As Sakyong Mipham explains in Ruling Your World (p. 27, hardcover edition), the four mythical being of central Asia (Tiger, Snow Lion, Garuda, and Dragon) represent four kinds of confidence developed on the Buddhist path. These four mythological beast also are called the Four Dignities in the Shambhala Training levels, and in that curriculum they delineate four stages on the path of the Shambhala Warrior. For example, in the Shambhala Training levels the Dragon dignity of the “inscrutable” stage can be seen as one of the highest levels of realization on the Tibetan warrior's path and the basis for true rulership.
This four class session will review the paths of the Tiger, Snow Lion, Garuda, and Dragon using Sakyong Mipham's Ruling Your World
. The stages on the path will be explained as a set of practices and realizations that are accessible to us all. Before the first class, reading or reviewing the book's first seven chapters (to page 71 in the hardcover edition) is highly recommended.
In addition, the course will explain in more formal detail the meditation practices applied at the different stages of the Shambhala Buddhist path, the requirements for receiving these practices, and (broadly speaking) how these meditation practices interrelate to the Four Dignities. The relevant parts of the Shambhala.org web site will be used for this discussion to empower participants to explore this material on their own.
The course will be taught by Jason Newman and Roger Guest on Tuesdays, February 26 – March 16, 7pm, at 107-B Bonnet Street in Manchester. Suggested donation: $40 (or whatever is affordable). Free to sustaining members.
If you do not own Ruling Your World
and would like to be part of a group book order, please notify Bethany Perron before Thursday evening, February 21, at 375-6353 or perronb@orvis.com.
If you are new to meditation practice, please call Martha Schoenemann 325-3146 or Bethany Perron 375-6353 to arrange instruction.
