Mudra Space Awareness Weekend

This spring the Manchester Shambhala Meditation Group will be hosting a very special event — a weekend program called Mudra Space Awareness, taught by Suzann Duquette. The combination of this program and this teacher is so special that we already have people who have signed up to attend the workshop from the Albany, Troy, and White River Jct. Shambhala Centers!

Please read the specific program description below, and note that this will not be a weekend of mainly sitting practice, but rather, of other exercises that explore the mind/body relationship to space.

Date: April 25 – 26
Time: Saturday 9 – 6, Sunday 9 – 5
Cost: $75 plus teaching gift (teaching gift is explained below)

Please RSVP to Susan Engel at susan_engel (at) comcast (dot) net or 362-9952 if you plan to attend, or if you have any questions. The program will either be held at the MSMG shrine room, at a local private elementary school, depending on how many sign up.

The Program

Mudra Space Awareness is a mind/body transformation method developed by The Ven. Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche (VCTR). Inspired by his education in Tibetan Monastic dance, the exercises combine intense physical training with focused sensory awareness to unlock our inherent freedom and create a radical shift in our understanding of the mind/body relationship to space.

In the early 1970s, Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche introduced Mudra practice before he formally conferred Vajrayana (Tantric Buddhist) teachings to his American students. This practice accessed the qualities of Dzogchen and Mahamudra that dissolve distinctions between the sacred and profane aspects of experience. Mudra was presented initially as theater training to some of the foremost theater innovators of that decade. Mudra has since been applied, both as an adjunct to formal sitting meditation, and increasingly as a means for developing meditation in action.

“The Vidyadhara’s teachings on Mudra Space Awareness are one of Shambhala’s hidden treasures. The cycle of exercises embody his creative genius in making the vajrayana teachings accessible and penetrating. He begins at the beginning-how to be in space-then takes us step by step through how to stand, walk, relate with things, and interact with people. So simple, yet so revealing! ”

Our Teacher

Suzann’s formal biography follows; I want to preface it by saying that she is an absolutely fantastic and very senior teacher in our lineage, and we are very lucky to have her come to Manchester.

Suzann began her study of Mudra as part of the Berkeley Mudra Space Awareness Group in 1974. She now teaches Mudra as a dedicated program and as a method within other programs and retreats to help students embody key Shambhala Buddhist teachings, access direct experience, and heighten their panoramic awareness. Suzann is a senior student and teacher in the lineage of Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche and Sakyong Mipham Rinpoche. Former director of Karma Choling, Suzann is currently core faculty for the Mukpo Institute of Karma Choling and also teaches Shambhala Buddhist programs throughout the United States and Canada.

Teaching Gift Explanation

The fee that Suzann charges for the weekend workshop is extremely modest. Therefore, participants are invited to contribute something extra towards her compensation if they would like to do so. During the weekend we will designate a place to put contributions. They will all be combined and presented to Suzann at the conclusion of the workshop.

The usual instruction for how much to contribute is to think about what number naturally comes to mind for you. Then go a little bit beyond that amount to stretch yourself. Each person/s contribution will reflect their own circumstances, and making this gift is voluntary, not required.
